According to ancient texts and legends

  • A staunch and ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, the demon king Ravana performed a long and rigorous penance, the ultimate aim of which was to summon Lord Shiva to the glorious kingdom of Lanka.
  • In awe, Lord Shiva gave him a Jyotirlinga, on the condition that the earth would not touch it until he reached Lanka.
  • But the gods intervened, and Ravana was forced to keep it in the Deogarh. As soon as he placed it, it remained there forever.
  • This Jyotirlinga came to be worshipped as Vaidyanath (Divine Healer).
