Mythology & Sacredness

The locals strongly believe that Tso Moriri is guarded by divine spirits, which gives the lake a very special sense of sacredness, and it is a very important sacred lake to them. Strategically located above the village, the Karzok Monastery contributes to the sacred atmosphere of the area, which gives the area its spiritual character. It is well known to tourists that they should remain quiet and take great care not to pollute the pristine waters of the lake, thus respecting its sacred status.

It is said that the water of the lake reflects the mood of the mountains, turning a dark blue when the mountains are calm and becoming cloudy when trouble is approaching - both meteorologically and spiritually.
