Historical and Mythological Significance:

  • As narrated in the Shiva Puranas, the mythological story goes like this: Sage Gautama meditated here and washed away his sins by bringing down the holy Ganges (Godavari). He prayed to Lord Shiva to establish a permanent abode here, and thus the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga came into existence.
  • It is believed that the Pandavas also visited this place during their period of exile.
  • This particular Jyotirlinga is unusual and unique as it has a three-faced lingam, representing Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

Beliefs and Significance:

  • It is said that the Darshan of Trimbakeshwar, a sacred and divine act, has the extraordinary power to free one from the eternal process of birth and death or Moksha.
  • The world's largest religious festival, the Kumbh Mela, is celebrated here every 12 years, which emphasizes its deep significance and cultural significance.
  • The only Jyotirlinga where the Linga naturally decays over time, signifying the cycle of creation, preservation and destruction.

  • It was carefully crafted from black stone, in keeping with the rich design and construction typical of the ancient Hemadpanthi tradition of the ancient Yadava dynasty.
