Situated in the bustling Prabhadevi district of Mumbai city, Siddhivinayak Temple is one of the most sacred and revered places of worship in all of India. Its location is such that it can be easily reached from any part of the city, being about 9 kilometers from the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and about 11 kilometers from the international airport i.e. Mumbai Airport.

Historical Context:

Built in 1801 by talented craftsmen Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil, the temple began its life as a humble and unpretentious building. A childless woman, Deubai Patil consecrated this holy place with a sincere desire to fulfill the deep-rooted desires of women who yearned for motherhood and the boon of children. With the passage of time and years, this humble building became immensely popular among the people, eventually transforming into a grand temple that exudes the spirit of divine power with unparalleled architectural beauty.
 

Belief and Meaning:

Lord Ganesha, affectionately called Siddhivinayak by his devotees, is a much-revered deity as the remover of all obstacles in life and the bestower of success and prosperity. A large number of devotees, including popular Bollywood stars, powerful politicians, hardworking students and industrialists, visit this holy temple in the hope of receiving blessings for their new projects and ventures.

Architectural Beauty:

  • The Grihasthan houses a 2.5-foot black stone idol of Lord Ganesha with its trunk leaning to the right, which is a unique feature.
  • The dome of the temple is covered with beautiful gold plating, which shines magnificently in the light, while the huge wooden doors used to enter the sanctum are beautifully crafted. These doors are intricately carved with vivid images of Ashtavinayak, symbolizing the eight different forms of Ganesha worshipped in the state of Maharashtra.
  • The inner ceiling above the huge form of Ganesha is decorated with a layer of gold.

  • During the festive days of Ganesh Chaturthi and Angarika Sankashti Chaturthi, the temple becomes a lively and vibrant religious carnival, full of energy and devotion.
  • Devotees undertake spiritual pilgrimages, choosing to walk barefoot through many places in the city, all as a sincere expression of their unwavering commitment to devotion.
  • The temple trust runs several charitable and educational schemes.

  • 5:30 AM to 9:50 PM (except Tuesdays)
  • Tuesday (most crowded): 3:15 PM to 12:30 PM (next day)

Best time to visit is between October to March when the weather is cooler and festivals are more frequent.

  • Dress modestly.
  • Taking photographs inside the holy area of the sanctum is not allowed.
