Situated on Bhulabhai Desai Road in the South Mumbai area of ​​Mahalaxmi, the temple is strategically located as it is easily accessible by road from the Mahalaxmi railway station. Additionally, it is about 18 kilometres from the famous Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, making it easily accessible for travelers from all over the world.

Historical Significance:

Built in 1831 by Hindu merchant Dhakji Dadaji, this temple was established to worship Goddess Mahalaxmi. According to legend, when the Hornby Wellard project was being built, the project's chief engineer, Ramji Shivji Prabhu, received a divine vision from God in which he was asked to find the idols of Mahalaxmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswati that were underwater and bring them to the surface. And then the project went smoothly and hence the temple was established on the hill.

Temple Timings:

  • Darshan: Daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM

  • Aarti Timings:

    • Morning Aarti: 7:00 AM – 7:20 AM

    • Naivedya (Afternoon Offering): 12:00 PM

    • Dhoop Aarti (Evening): 6:30 PM – 6:40 PM

    • Evening Aarti: 7:30 PM – 7:50 PM

    • Shej Aarti (Night): 10:00 PM

Architectural Wonders:

  • Style: Traditional Indian temple architecture with a 15-metre-high shikhara (spire).
  • Sanctum: Decorated with gold ornaments and silk cloth, there are idols of the tridevi - Mahalakshmi (centre), Mahakali (right) and Mahasaraswati (left).
  • Features: Wooden carvings on doors, silverware and a meeting pavilion with a silver lion facing the deities.

Spiritual Practices

  • Navratri (Chaitra and Ashwin): The temple is illuminated with flowers and lights; each goddess is worshipped for three days.
  • Diwali: Illuminated with lamps, signifying the victory of light over darkness.
  • Annakut: On Kartik Purnima, worship the gods by offering 56 types of sweets and snacks.
  • Gudi Padwa: Includes a palanquin procession and special ceremonies.
  • Offerings: Devotees offer coconuts, flowers and sweets.
  • Puja: Special rituals like Rudrabhishek and Laghurudrabhishek can be performed.
  • Akhand Jyot: This is an eternal and sacred flame that is continuously lit in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

Tips for visitors:

  • Best time to visit: October to March for good weather and the festive season.
  • Dress code: It is advised that guests wear traditional Indian attire for the event.
  • Photography is not allowed in the temple premises.
  • Shoes: Must be removed before entering; shoe storage facilities are available.
