Patalpani Falls is an extremely beautiful and captivating natural wonder located in the picturesque Mahu Tehsil, a part of the beautiful Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. This amazing waterfall falls suddenly from a height of about 91.5 meters, which is 300 feet, and is formed by the flowing water of the Choral River, one of the main tributaries of the mighty Narmada River. The waterfall is known and famous for its extraordinary scenic beauty, especially during the enchanting monsoon months when the water flow is at its maximum capacity, creating a truly captivating and mesmerizing experience that attracts visitors from all over the world.

  • The nearest city from where we are is Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, which is about 8 kilometers away.
  • By Road: The region is also well connected with a well-maintained road network; hence, tourists can drive themselves or use bus transport to reach Mhow. After reaching Mhow, they can use local transport services to reach the amazing waterfall.
  • By Train: Patalpani railway station is strategically located near the beautiful waterfall, which is located on the Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (MHOW)-Sanwad meter gauge line. Tourists can enjoy a great experience in the heritage train from Dr. Ambedkar Nagar to Kalakund, where they are given breathtaking and scenic views of the enchanting valley as well as the flowing Coral River.

Etymology and Folklore

The name "Patalpani" is derived from local mythology. The word "Patal" is used in Hindu mythology for the underground, and "pani" means water. People believe that the pool below the waterfall is so deep that it goes into the abyss, and that is why the place is named this way.

Best time to visit

  • Monsoon season (July to September): The falls are at their best, with thick green leaves and a heavy flow of water.
  • Post-monsoon (October to November): The environment remains lush, and the water flow remains magnificent.
  • Avoid: Summer months (April to June) when the falls may dry up.

Safety precautions

Tourists are advised to be extremely vigilant, especially during the unpredictable monsoon season, as the place is very prone to flash floods of sudden and life-threatening intensity. In 2011, a horrific incident took place, in which five persons tragically died when they were unexpectedly swept away by the fast and powerful flow of water. After this tragic incident, several safety measures were implemented, such as the construction of bridges and stairs to provide safety to people in the area.
