Palitana is a holy Jain pilgrimage site located in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat state. Palitana is also known as "Shatrunjay Parvat". Shatrunjay Parvat, which has more than 900 Jain temples, is a central place of faith for religious pilgrims for thousands of years. This mountain is considered very sacred in Jainism because it is believed that many Tirthankars have performed penance on this mountain and attained salvation.

Historical Background:

The history of Palitana is many centuries old. It is said that the first Tirthankar, Lord Adinath, performed penance here. Many temples on Shatrunjay Parvat were built between the 11th century and the 20th century. According to special information, the construction of a temple on this mountain was first started by King Samprati, who was the ruler of the Mauryan dynasty after Ashoka and was considered a bright follower of Jainism.

The Jains have considered Shatrunjay Mountain as the "land of salvation". It is said that thousands of sages have attained salvation on this mountain. Especially in the months of Chaitra and Kartik, pilgrims come here in large numbers.

Sculpture and Architecture:

The temples on Shatrunjay Mountain are known for their luxurious and artistic sculpture. Each temple is decorated with beautiful carvings. Jain sculptures have a wonderful blend of realism, simplicity and spiritual feelings. The main temple of Lord Adinath is very large and magnificent. The artistic patterns carved very beautifully on the domes, arches, doors and walls of the temple are visible.

Shatrunjay Parvat Yatra:

The journey to Shatrunjay Parvat usually starts early in the morning. The climb up the mountain is about 3.5 km. and there are more than 3800 steps in it. Pilgrims climb the mountain on foot with the chant of ‘Jai Shatrunjay’ and go for temple darshan. During the journey, pilgrims take a break at different pillar places to take rest. After reaching the mountain, they visit the main temple and several other temples and pray with devotion.

Main temple and sub-temples:

The main temple located on Shatrunjay Parvat is dedicated to Lord Adinath. The sculpture and grandeur of this temple are amazing. Around the main temple, there are many sub-temples with magnificent structures like havelis such as "Chaumukhi Mandir", "Samavasharne Mandir", "Moti Kot", "Shri Adishwar Mandir" etc. Devotees go to all these temples for idol darshan and worship.

Palitana City:

Palitana city located near the foothills of the mountain also holds special importance for tourists. There are many religious institutions, eateries, pilgrim residences and Jainism related alms houses here. The city itself is a peaceful and religious place where pilgrims get complete facilities.

Tourist facilities:

Palitana has many types of facilities available for pilgrims. Doli service is available for those who cannot climb the mountain. Arrangements for free food, accommodation and rest are made by many Jainism institutions. The arrangements of roads, paths, water, hospitality etc. are being continuously improved for a comfortable journey here.

Fairs and festivals here and there:

A huge fair is held here on the eleventh day of Chaitra Sud, which is known as "Palitana Mela". At this time, thousands of pilgrims climb the mountain by foot. A special pilgrimage is also held here on Kartik Purnima. At this time, the entire mountain is illuminated with light and an atmosphere of devotion is created.

Travel time according to seasons:

The best time to travel to Palitana is considered to be the winter season (November to February). During this period, the weather is comfortable and suitable for travel. In the summer season, the sun is more and the climb becomes a little difficult. Climbing the mountain can be dangerous during the rainy season.

Sensitive Rules:

Palitana is a holy place for Jainism, so some special rules and regulations need to be followed here. Jain diet is strictly followed here in food. It is prohibited to take any kind of plastic, chips packets, paddy items or non-veg items while climbing the mountain. Peaceful and regular behavior is expected from the pilgrims.
