Located in the spiritual heart of Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is situated on the sacred Mandhata Island, which resembles the Om (ॐ) symbol in the divine Narmada River. It is one of the 12 divine Jyotirlingas, which is not just a temple but a spiritual blend of divinity, devotion and nature.

Mythology and Legends

The word "Omkareshwar" has a deep significance of "Lord of Om", one of the first and main manifestations of Lord Shiva in Hindu mythology. The history of Jyotirlinga, a shining pillar of light symbolizing Lord Shiva, lies in the sacred texts and scriptures of Hinduism:

Legend of Vindhya Mountain: It is believed that the god Vindhya, after being severely criticized for his enormous pride and arrogance, decided to humble himself and worship Lord Shiva in the true sense with an unprecedented level of devotion and sincerity. As a symbol of Vindhya's true prayer and offering, Lord Shiva, pleased with the devotion, manifested in a divine form known as Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga.

Enmity of Devas and Demons: According to another legend, when a great war took place between the Devas (gods) and the Demons (demons), the Devas prayed to Lord Shiva here, and he came as Omkareshwar and saved them.

  • It is important to note that two important temples are most associated with this particular Jyotirlinga:
  • Omkareshwar Temple - located on Mandhata Island (middle Jyotirlinga)
  • Mamaleshwar Temple is located on the southern bank of the Narmada River; some believe that the temple and the river together form a complete Jyotirlinga, representing the divine relationship between them.

Temple design and architecture

  • The Omkareshwar Temple has classical Nagara-style architecture with carved pillars, pinnacles, and intricately carved walls.
  • It stands on a hill and can be reached by climbing 100+ steps or by a swing bridge over the river.
  • The temple has a sacred sanctum (sanctum sanctorum) that houses a Jyotirlinga, as well as shrines to Ganesha, Parvati, and others.
  • The Mamaleshwar Temple, which is smaller, has older carvings and is equally sacred.

Island of Om – Mandhata Dweep

  • The most amazing spiritual wonder is that Mandhata Island itself is specifically designed in the shape of the revered and sacred 'Om' symbol.
  • This unusual quality is one of the reasons why it is one of the most sought after heavenly pilgrimage sites, sought after by those on the path of spiritual discovery.
  • Pilgrims usually perform a Parikrama (circumambulation) around the island, covering all the major temples, ghats and ashrams in a 7-8 km spiritual path.

Rituals, Puja and Aarti

  • Day and night, the devoted priests of the temple perform the sacred rituals of Rudrabhishek and Laghu Rudra Puja with complete devotion and respect.
  • Specific pujas are performed on Mondays, Shravan month, Mahashivratri and Amavasya.
  • Every evening, a calm and peaceful Maha Aarti is performed, enveloping the entire island in a peaceful atmosphere filled with rhythmic and melodious mantras as well as the roaring of conch shells.

Devotees visit this holy place and take religious holy dips at various ghats including notable places like Koti Tirtha, Gauri Kund and Ram Ghat.
