Nageshwar Temple is located on the Saurashtra coast of Gujarat, between the city of Dwarka and the island of Bet Dwarka. It is about 17-18 km from the holy city of Dwarka.

"Darshan karu Nageshwar jyotinu, jya Shiv virajta antaryami, Bhakto ne aashish aape sada, mukti aape man ni kami."

History and Mythological Significance

According to the Shiva Purana, there was a demon named Daruk, whose companion Daruk was an ardent devotee of Goddess Parvati. With blessings, Daruk developed powers and started harassing sages and devotees.

Supriya, Daruk and others, who had faith in Shiva, captured him. Supriya asked them all to chant "Om Namah Shivaya" and Lord Shiva came and killed the demon.

To protect his loyal devotees and provide eternal safety, Lord Shiva assumed the sacred and divine form of a Jyotirlinga at this particular place. As a result of this incident, the place became widely known and revered as Nageshwar.

  • The sanctum sanctorum (sanctum sanctorum) houses the divine Jyotirlinga, which faces south.
  • The interior of the temple is magnificent and decorated with inscriptions and divine symbolism.

  • A notable feature of this temple is the south-facing linga. Unlike the usual orientation of most temples, its linga should face south, while the gomukh, the water face, faces east.
