Located in the most beautiful city of Rajasthan, Jag Mandir is a historical site situated on Deepakar Island in the middle of Lake Pichola. The humble name of this temple conjures up images of royal style and peaceful atmosphere. The architecture and royal history here are so captivating that it attracts tourists from all over the world.

History:

The builder of Jag Mandir was Maharana Karan Singh (1620-1628) and its construction was completed by his son Maharana Jagat Singh I (1628–1652). The temple is also named ‘Jag Mandir’ after Maharana Jagat Singh. This building is not only beautiful but has also witnessed many important events in history.

Mughal prince Dara Shikoh, who had rebelled against his father, took refuge here to save his life. Maharana Karan Singh gave him shelter at that time and later some sections were also built in honour of Dara Shikoh.

Architectural Style:

The architecture of Jag Mandir is a beautiful blend of Mewari and Mughal styles. The entire temple is built in white marble. It has beautiful domes, elegant doors, mardara, lattice work and beautiful gardens. The enchanting main entrance is adorned with elephant statues, which symbolise the royal welcome given.

The temple's components like 'Gul Mahal', 'Jaroka Mahal', 'Darikhana' and 'Pappa Mahal' also add to its grandeur. The 'Gul Mahal' was specially built for Dara Shikoh and has many wonderful frescoes and intricate carvings.

Relationship between Pichola Lake and Jag Mandir:

Pichola Lake is the heart of Udaipur city and Jag Mandir is situated in its middle which enhances its beauty. Jag Mandir, reflected in the crystal clear water at sunrise or sunset, gives a dreamlike feel.

Tourism Importance:

Jag Mandir is currently a major tourist destination. Tourists reach this temple from Pichola Lake by taking small boats. The place is also rented here for royal weddings, parties, and shooting for movies etc. Today, a luxurious restaurant and hotel facilities are available inside the temple.

• Gul Mahal: This building was specially built for Dara Shikoh. It has a stunning Markaz, stained glass and marble work.
• Fountain Garden: A lush garden with small fountains and linear paths.
• Elephant Gate: The two giant elephant sculptures on the side of the pavilion win the hearts.
• Darikhana: The royal dining hall where meals were arranged for royal guests.
• Shailin Hotel: Today, a heritage hotel also operates here.

Jag Mandir was not only a refuge for Dara Shikoh, but was also used many times for political discussions, royal ceremonies and to welcome foreign guests. During the British rule, many British officials were also welcomed here.
